Buzzer Fly Pattern

The buzzer (also known as a chironomid) is one of the most effective stillwater fly patterns ever created. It imitates the larva stage of midges, which are present in virtually every freshwater environment. Mastering the buzzer will put more fish on your line.

Why Buzzers Work

Buzzers are available to trout throughout the year. While mayflies and caddis have specific hatching windows, midges are always present. Trout feed on buzzer larvae at all depths, making them a reliable food source.

"If there's one fly pattern every stillwater angler should master, it's the buzzer. It's simple to tie, easy to fish, and catches fish year-round."

Materials You'll Need

  • Hook: Scud hook, sizes 10-16
  • Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 in black, olive, or brown
  • Body: Thread or quill
  • Thorax: Peacock herl or dubbing
  • Breathers: White or orange thread (optional)

Step-by-Step Tying Instructions

1

Secure the Hook

Place the hook in the vise with the point exposed. Start your thread at the eye and wrap a thread base back to the bend of the hook.

2

Tie In the Tail Breathers

For a buzzer with breathers, tie in a small bunch of white or orange thread at the bend. Leave it extending about 1cm behind the hook.

3

Build the Body

Wrap your thread forward to create a tapered body. The body should be thinnest at the tail and thickest at the thorax. Use touching turns for a smooth finish.

4

Create the Thorax

Tie in peacock herl or dubbing behind the eye. Wrap 3-4 turns to create a buggy thorax. This adds bulk and attracts fish.

5

Finish the Fly

Whip finish behind the eye and apply a small drop of head cement. Your buzzer is ready to fish!

Fishing the Buzzer

There are two main methods for fishing buzzers:

  • Static: Let the buzzer sink to the desired depth and wait. Trout will often take a stationary buzzer.
  • Slow retrieve: Use a slow, hand-twist retrieve to imitate an emerging buzzer.
